I Like Big Bows & I Cannot Lie: The Ultimate Spring Porch Statement

Spring has arrived, and with it, a fresh new look for our storefront! If you haven't noticed, bows are so popular in everything from clothing and accessories to home decor, so this spring, we went BIG and put a bow on it.

If you've ever driven by the store and wondered how in the world we pull off these seasonal arbor displays, we’re pulling back the curtain to show you exactly how we built this pretty in pink bow from scratch, so you can try it too!

The Vision: A Bold Spring Statement

Spring is all about renewal—longer days, warmer weather, and a reason to refresh our spaces. In year's past we created a floral basket arch that used over thirty baskets and a hundred or more floral stems so this spring, we wanted to go big (or bow home 😂) so what better dramatic and playful statement piece than a massive pink bow?

We envisioned something oversized, with just the right amount of structure, movement, and texture to make people stop in their tracks and set the tone for the experience they will get when they step inside.

Step-by-Step: How We Built Our Oversized Bow

Step 1: Creating the Frame (Chicken Wire & Structure)

To start, we built the bow’s skeleton using chicken wire and galvanized steel wire. The goal was to keep it lightweight yet sturdy.

We constructed the bow in two separate pieces, later connecting them at the center with zip ties for easier handling.

Step 2: Adding Fabric & the Flowing Ribbons

Once the structure was solid, we wrapped the bow with a canvas drop cloth painted pink, smoothing out the edges to create a seamless look.

To attach the drop cloth to the chicken wire frame, we grabbed the trusty hot glue gun (a DIY lifesaver). We worked in small sections, applying a generous amount of hot glue to the inside of the bow, securing the drop cloth to the underside. Once the glue was applied, we pressed and wrapped the fabric around the chicken wire, sandwiching everything together. Since hot glue dries fast, doing this in small increments was the key to keeping everything secure without making a mess. Could a construction adhesive spray work? Probably! But we used what we had, and hot glue did the job beautifully.

Once the fabric was secured, it was time to bring the bow to life by creasing the chicken wire frame—yes, this took some muscle! By bending and shaping the frame, we gave the bow natural-looking folds that made it look like real gathered fabric. Then, we joined the two halves together with zip ties before attaching it to the arbor.

We installed the bow onto the arbor before wrapping the center section with another small piece of drop cloth. This way, we could easily hide any screws or staples that were used to anchor the bow to the frame, keeping everything looking polished and seamless.

The ribbon tails needed a soft yet structured feel, so we glued 14-Gauge Galvanized Steel Wire into the edges of additional canvas strips. This allowed us to create flowing, natural-looking ribbon pieces that would hold their shape beautifully.

Yes, that's blue paint on the back - we literally had these drop cloths lying around and we should have probably gotten another gallon of pink paint to cover up that blue!

Step 3: Strengthening the Bow (Foam & Spray Foam Tricks)

A painted drop cloth is heavy, so to add durability and maintain shape, we incorporated rigid foam board down the middle of the bow. Then, we filled the bottom half of the interior with big gaps spray foam—a trick to help hold everything together while hiding the chicken wire. We did all of this before installing it onto the arbor, this allowed the bow to keep its shape while being transported and installed.

Step 4: Adding Faux Topiaries for Extra Impact

To frame the bow and give our arbor a fuller, high-end look, we added faux topiaries (which we sourced from Amazon).

When they arrived, they were a little misshapen from being packed in a box, but with a little help from a heat gun, they quickly sprang back to life. Pro Tip: Apply the heat from the inside—the plastic frame is what needs reshaping, not the delicate plastic petals. This helps avoid scorching or warping the exterior leaves of the topiary.

🔥 Keep the heat gun moving—if you leave it in one spot too long, the plastic will melt. It doesn’t take much for it to loosen up! No heat gun? A hair dryer could do the trick in a pinch.

Once they looked perfect, we cut out sections of the topiary frames to fit around our 4x4 arbor posts. Then, we zip-tied and stapled them in place, adding a few faux florals for extra color and texture.

How You Can Recreate This Look at Home

Thinking about creating your own oversized decor piece? Here are our top tips:

Work with what you’ve got – Make sure your proportions fit your space. Bigger is great, but balance is key!
Use lightweight materials – Chicken wire, foam board, and fabric make for a bold look without the bulk.
Get creative with structure – Hidden supports (like plywood or rigid foam) can help keep everything secure.
Mix in real & faux – Faux florals are your best friend, but placement and layering make all the difference.
Think outside the box – A little galvanized wire can go a long way in adding movement and shape.
